This website provides a space for commentary on research, issues and events influencing perceptions of civil society and the third sector. It aims to highlight evidence, question assumptions, suggest alternatives – and sometimes to shake the articles of faith.

Civil society is a common public space, not an institution. It is where individuals, groups, voluntary organisations, social ventures and communities help others or change society beyond the state and the market.

It is an exciting, edgy space whose boundaries are fluid, always under re-definition – or should be. Keeping the civil society space dynamic means constantly exploring its – often persuasive – rhetoric, myths, legends and realities.

The website draws on my own work in the area of civil society’s funding resources and philanthropy. However, contributions from others would be welcome. If you would like to submit an article, please get in touch using the contact form which can be found here.
